Max Henrion talks value of optionality at Energy, Utility, and Environment conference
Max Henrion delivered a talk entitled "The Value of Optionality in Deploying Grid Storage" at the 2018 Energy, Utility, and Environment Conference in San Diego, CA. The talk, co-authored with Kim Mullins, used the Puente natural gas plant (NG) versus energy storage system (ESS) comparison performed by CAISO as a case study to explore how changing dynamics in the energy storage market affect the decision to build a natural gas peaker plant or a similarly sized energy storage system. For a fair comparison between systems, including capital and operational costs and revenues, the study uses EPRI's StorageVET (Storage Value Estimation Tool), and find that increasing price volatility and decreasing battery storage costs will favor the ESS, while decreasing natural gas and/or rising and stable electricity prices will tend to favor the NG plant.
